Feeding live mealworms is a very special treat to offer not only your bluebirds, but a variety of other birds as well. Many birders believe that live mealworms are only for bluebirds, but this is not true. Many bird species eat live mealworms, including finches, cardinals, woodpeckers, wrens, titmice, robins, blue jays, sparrows, nuthatches, chickadees, catbirds and also purple martins!
Mealworms are the larvae of mealworm beetles, a species of the darkling beetle. They have a very high amount of protein and are very palatable to birds.
